HOW TO TELL REAL TURQUOISE FROM DYED HOWLITE
Worth knowing, because most cheap turquoise sold online is not turquoise.
Howlite is a white stone that takes dye extremely well. Dyed blue, it looks convincingly like turquoise and costs a fraction of the price. Reconstituted turquoise, which is turquoise dust mixed with resin, is also common.
What to look for. Natural turquoise has uneven colour across beads and irregular veining, called matrix, that runs at different angles on each bead. Dyed howlite tends to have very even colour and veining that looks similar bead to bead.
Ours is natural turquoise, which is why the beads are not identical to each other.
