How to wear
Choose the mala if:

WHY 108 MATCHED BEADS COST WHAT THEY COST
One 7 Mukhi bead is not hard to find. One hundred and eight of them, matched in size and colour, is a different job entirely.
Beads are sorted by hand from a much larger lot. Most get set aside for being too big, too small, the wrong shade, or uneven across the faces. What is left gets strung. That sorting is most of the cost, and it is why a real 7 Mukhi mala is never cheap.
It is also where the market cuts corners. A mala sold suspiciously cheap is usually 5 Mukhi beads with a few 7 Mukhi mixed in, because 5 Mukhi is far more common. Count the faces on a few beads when yours arrives. Every one of ours is a 7 Mukhi.

HOW TO USE IT FOR JAPA
Most people are never told this properly, so here it is simply.
Mantra for this mala: ॐ हूं नमः (Om Hoom Namah), or any mantra you already follow.
1. Sit facing east or north, in a clean place, ideally the same place each day.
2. Hold the mala in your right hand, draped over your middle finger.
3. Use your thumb to pull each bead towards you. Do not use your index finger. This is the one rule almost everyone breaks.
4. Start at the bead next to the guru bead. Chant once per bead.
5. When you reach the guru bead again, you have completed 108. Do not cross the guru bead. Turn the mala around and go back the other way for your next round.
6. Finish by touching the guru bead to your forehead.

Before your first use
Sprinkle clean water or Gangajal on the mala and chant your mantra 108 times to begin.
Caring for it
• Keep it in a clean cloth pouch or mala bag, not loose in a drawer
• Remove before bathing and sleeping
• Keep away from soap, perfume and chemicals
• A drop of oil every few months keeps the beads from drying
• Traditionally, a japa mala is not handled by others
WHY 108, AND WHAT THE GURU BEAD IS
108 is the traditional count for japa across Vedic practice. One full round of the mala is one full round of your mantra.
The guru bead is the larger bead where the mala closes. It marks the beginning and end of every round, and traditionally it is not crossed over. You turn the mala and go back instead.
