How to Know If a Rudraksha Is Authentic

Five questions to ask about any bead

No single test answers them all, so ask these before you trust a claim.

  • Has the bead been altered or reconstructed?
  • Is the stated origin accurate?
  • What does the certification establish?
  • Has this particular bead been examined or tested?
  • What evidence supports the claim being made?

Test 1

The famous water test

You've probably heard this one:

“A real Rudraksha sinks. A fake one floats.”

It sounds simple. It also isn't a reliable authentication rule.

Whether something floats or sinks depends fundamentally on physical properties such as density and buoyancy. Natural Elaeocarpus ganitrus endocarps can also vary in their physical characteristics. Research examining E. ganitrus endocarps has documented detailed variation in their physical structure and density.

  • Sinks ≠ automatically authentic.
  • Floats ≠ automatically fake.

A water test may tell you something about that particular object's physical behaviour in water. It does not, by itself, establish its species, natural Mukhi structure, origin or complete authenticity.

Our view

We would rather tell you that a test has limitations

than give you a convenient rule that sounds certain but isn't.

Certainty should be earned by evidence.

Test 2

What about the copper coin test?

There are many claims online that placing a Rudraksha between copper coins and observing its movement can establish its authenticity or demonstrate particular electromagnetic properties.

We have not found credible scientific research establishing this as a validated authentication method for Rudraksha.

That doesn't mean someone cannot have a personal or spiritual experience with the practice. It simply means we should be careful about calling a spiritual or experiential practice a scientifically validated authentication test. Those are different things.
